Graphic designer on design and Indianculture.
Itcould. Whether it should will of course be driven by the context in which thedesign is created. Incorporating a sense of Indianness into design purely forthe sake of it serves no purpose. For example, if one is creating a brandidentity for an Indian company which is competing on a global stage, culturalcontext is quite irrelevant.
While thereis some very cutting edge design happening, I would question how original someof the work is. Much of it seems influenced by international design magazinesand trends. However, some designers doing innovative and relevant work thatspeak a global language, yet have distinctive quality of their own.
What is exciting is the influx and outfluxhappening around us. This environment provides the opportunity to create workthat can make an impact globally. To negotiate the balance between global andlocal influences to reflect a dynamic and changing contemporary, urban India isparticularly challenging for me.
It''s a back and forth process.Design influences change. It impacts our youth. It sets trends. It also respondsto the youth. This is especially apparent in the music and retail industry.
